France Search engine optimization On-site SEO techniques:

In the following tutorial we will discuss some basic steps in optimizing an apache hosted website for search engine marketing.

1 If you havnt already, choose a domain name that is relative to your site content.
It is statistically proven easier to rank well for ones proper domain name

2 Make a list of key words and search terms that you believe your target market will be using
to find information through search engines based on current research or your own experience.

3 Write articles that are relevant to each of those keywords or key phrases. Even if some terms are
similar in definition try to find a specific way to express how one could differ from the other.

4 Be sure to properly use alt tags (image descriptions) and link anchor text in order to accurately
describe the content of images and information that links will direct a user to.

5 Meta tags Choose title tags that accurately represent the information included in the page content.

6 If possible host your domain in-house, register your proper name servers, and do not share your
ip address with other websites.

7 Use wild cards in your DNS zone files like in the following example

$TTL 86400

@ IN SOA ns1.yourdomain.com. info.yourdomain.com. (
2009113001 ; serial number YYMMDDNN
28800 ; Refresh
7200 ; Retry
864000 ; Expire
86400 ; Min TTL
)

NS ns1.yourdomain.com.
NS ns2.yourdomain.com.

MX 10 yourdomain.com.
MX 20 yourdomain.com.
IN TXT "v=spf1 a mx ~all"

$ORIGIN yourdomain.com.
* IN A 0.0.0.0
www IN A 0.0.0.0
mail IN A 0.0.0.0
smtp IN A 0.0.0.0
ftp IN A 0.0.0.0

Now notice the line * IN A 0.0.0.0 . This is an example use of the wild card A record in a zone file which specifies that any host proceeding the origin of yourdomain.com. should be accepted as valid and directed to 0.0.0.0 where 0.0.0.0 is your real ip address and your.domain.com. is your real domain name.

8 Make sure that all of your subdomains are redirected to your TLD (top level domain) or specified subdomain ie. www.

Note This rule set is intended for use from with in httpd.conf (server side redirect)
do not use this in .htaccess

# And for a site running on port 80
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST}!^fqdn\.www\.yourdomain\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST}!^$
RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://www.yourdomain.com/$1 [L,R]

For .htaccess this rule set will redirect all subdomains
to your top level domain or specified subdomain!

# If HTTP_HOST request header is non-blank
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} .
# AND HTTP_HOST request header does NOT contain canonical (preferred) domain name
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.example\.com
# Then issue 301-moved permanently to same 'page' on canonical domain
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Personally i use .htaccess for this purpose because its less headache when I have use for one of my subdomains in order to perform testing or design. In this example the result is a person could type http://what-ever-they-want.yourdomain.com and will always be redirected to your TLD or WWW subdomain. I will try to explain the reason why we use www for many websites instead of the TLD. Back when the internet was young and the graphical user interface was but a concept the application layer protocols of the tcp/ip stack were accessed directly by software that had mapped their port specification by name and needed user input in order to determine what type of service was being requested. For example the ftp command was written and still is to access the application layer protocol with a port designation of 21 and www at port 80 and so on. Over time software became more sophisticated and was made able to determine for itself what the port designation should be for a particular request and therefore no longer needed user input in order to determine the requested protocol or specified service.

I bring this up because I see some debate over which configuration should be prefered when accessing a website and the truth is it dosnt matter. Only specifying the tld is technically correct and perhaps even less overhead where www is a clear case of "because thats the way we've always done it".

9 Make sure your actual content is unique and relevant to the search terms you desire. More importantly try to make the content interesting, useful, entertaining and valuable to the user. Ultimately the user experience will determine how your pages rank with the search engines. Everything else is symptomatic of how useful the user found your content to be, including your bounce rate, back links, ctr and all other seo industry jargon that applies. Content is everything. If you provide your users with the information they are looking for at any given time for any given subject matter that relates to the subject material of your website then your users will visit your website again, again and again. The Search engines will take note of that and make the appropriate ajustments to your page rank in the search engine results pages. Where am I going to get all of this content you say? You have to write it. You have to do research and compile the information for your users which is what they were expecting you to do in the first place. There are no shortcuts here. The methods that are advertised as shortcuts will utlimately harm your rankings in the long run, so resist temptation for quick claims to fame and practice patience in your attempt to succeed in search engine optimization.

10 Finally listen to what the Search Engine representatives are saying. Im sure we've all seen a video or listened to an interview of some of the major search engine company representatives who give people advice or tips on how to rank well and if you listen carefully you may just find that golden nugget you are looking for.
